The Spirit - 46

Yachting Classique l Dec 2006

True Spirit of Bond
When Mick Newman of Spirit Yachts received a call requesting one of his yachts to star in the new Bond movie, he was shaken but not stirred. How to get a 54-footer to the Bahamas and then to Venice for filming was all in a day's (or maybe several month's) work...
One of the things I really enjoy about this job is its unpredictability. Whenever the phone rings you never know who is on the other end and a Monday morning in January produced one of the more unusual calls...

Boat l Nov 2006
When the makers of the new James Bond movie, Casino Royale, needed a boat worthy of the famous super-spy, it had to be something special. Martin Smith finds out why they chose a 54-foooter by the Ipswich-based Spirit Yachts.
In the midst of the modern-day luxury car market the names of British sports car marques such as Jensen, Jaguar and Aston Martin drip with connotations of quality, character and engineering excellence. But, if you had to choose a boat to match one of those vehicles, in terms of image, what would it be? It goes without saying that it would have to be full of character and beautifully crafted, and would have to perform better than almost anything else around. This was the problem that EON Productions, makers of the James Bond films, set themselves when they decided that in Casino Royale - the super-spy's latest outing - he would sail into St.Mark's square in Venice aboard his own yacht. And the craft that the Bond filmmakers - masters of appropriate product placement - decided he should own was one made by the Ipswich-based company Spirit Yachts. When you sail one, or even see one, you'll understand why.

David
Pelly was bewitched by Ghost
This
ambitious design from Spirit Yachts combines traditional looks
with modern sailing ability, and a luxurious interior. David Pelly
was bewitched after spending a day on board.
The
popularity of classic yacht racing recognizes that for many people,
beauty and grace of line is what they most admire in a sailing
yacht and since very few modern designs are pretty, such people
are obliged to look towards yachts of the classic era in which
beauty and performance were combined. But since there is only a
limited supply of ‘genuine’ classic yachts, there is
an increasing amount of interest in Spirit of Tradition yachts
which may be newly-built versions of classic designs or new designs
which pay homage to the qualities of classic ones while using modern
materials and systems. This exactly describes the approach of Spirit
Yachts whose latest launching, the Spirit 70 Ghost is by far their
most spectacular so far.

SPIRIT
OF ECSTACY
On
Britain's East Coast one firm of yacht builders is pushing the
limits of modern thinking while retaining those classic lines.
We test its biggest boat to-date.

They
say every yacht owner, as he walks away from his boat on it's mooring,
will pause to glance back and admire her lines. Buy a Spirit 70
and you'd better set aside some time for the ritual - a few hours,
perhaps - a nd a deck chair too, for the Spirit is an exceptionally
beautiful yacht.
